Surrounded by forest and the beautiful Swedish countryside, a greenhouse on an enormous scale now stands.<\/p>\n<p>The RegEnergy project in Fr\u00f6vi is the story of a greenhouse of at least 100,000<sup>m2<\/sup> that will produce over 8,000 tonnes of tomatoes every year, equivalent to about 10% of Sweden&#8217;s total tomato consumption. The tomatoes will be grown using surplus heat from the neighbouring Billerud paper mill. The factory&#8217;s production generates large amounts of waste heat, an unutilised energy source that has been wasted until now.<\/p>\n<p>With the RegEnergy project, the surplus heat will now be recycled instead. This is done in a closed, circular pipe system where the heat is pumped into the greenhouse, creating the ideal climate for tomato plants to grow. Once the heat is used in the greenhouse, the cooled waste heat is transported back to the factory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2779\" src=\"https:\/\/selectedv2.wdwc.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/assets-85f96d876fba47e3a0cfae02a92f8336-b3625afaf9214f38980c4dfce4f17b52-300x211.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selectedv2.wdwc.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/assets-85f96d876fba47e3a0cfae02a92f8336-b3625afaf9214f38980c4dfce4f17b52-300x211.webp 300w, https:\/\/selectedv2.wdwc.dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/assets-85f96d876fba47e3a0cfae02a92f8336-b3625afaf9214f38980c4dfce4f17b52.webp 704w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"builder-block builder-cd69b528bd524b148d463af6b180f859 builder-has-component css-msosv4\">\n<h2><strong>Numbers that speak<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It can be hard to imagine how much space 100,000m<sup>2<\/sup>, 10 hectares, actually takes up. But here are some key figures from the greenhouse construction process to give you an idea:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5,000 panes of glass ensure that the greenhouse is bathed in natural light.<\/li>\n<li>9,936 lights provide optimal lighting for the tomatoes.<\/li>\n<li>There is half a kilometre from one end of the greenhouse to the other.<\/li>\n<li>400 kilometres of pipes have been used to wind through the greenhouse. In addition to transporting heat around the greenhouse, the pipes also act as rails that can be used to move between the tomato plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Sweden, more than 80% of tomatoes are imported, and the RegEnergy project is therefore a groundbreaking project that shows how utilising surplus heat from large factories in Sweden can not only contribute to the green transition, but also increase food security in local production, shortening the distance from farm to fork by minimising the need for imports and long transport times.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Just the beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The RegEnergy project in Fr\u00f6vi is just the first of several projects in the Selected RegEnergy fund. Like the Fr\u00f6vi project, future projects will also include the establishment of greenhouses, where waste products from industrial production are used to produce sustainable food and biomaterials.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that by 2030, up to 53% of Europe&#8217;s energy consumption will be lost in the form of waste heat<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whyenergyefficiency.com\/solutions\/allsolutions\/the-worlds-largest-untapped-energy-source-excess-heat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(source<\/a>), while drought and water shortages are a growing problem in several of the countries where tomatoes, for example, are currently produced.
